American Opportunity for Housing, (AOH) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit State of Texas certified community housing development organization (CHDO), which evolved from Midwest Funding Corporation, a Kansas nonprofit housing developer established in 1992. Midwest Funding Corporation (MFC) was established to pursue properties made available through the Resolution Trust Corporation. In 1998, the officers of MFC decided to change its focus, and with the addition of David Starr and several additional board members, changed its name to American Opportunity for Housing, Inc. Since 1999, AOH has acquired over four-dozen multifamily sites, and continues to develop.
AOH has always focused on providing affordable multifamily housing in markets where it is most needed. Use of tax-exempt bonds and availability of tax exemption are integral factors in AOH being able to acquire quality multifamily units that are crucial to the neighborhoods workforce housing needs.
Sociological research shows that families that need assistance to transcend poverty tend to need several types of assistance. AOH has also focused on facilitating access to supportive services that residents express or indicate a need for. Based on this approach, social support services vary from site to site, and span the spectrum, from support of community little league sports, to on-site child-care, to health-awareness education, to home-ownership education, to transporting seniors to community activities and daycare facilities.
AOHs strength is its ability to acquire and maintain multifamily workforce housing. All other appropriate functions are outsourced to industry experts with whom AOH has developed strong cooperative relationships. Community-based organizations that provide social support services know their neighborhoods well, and because AOHs workforce housing sites are geographically dispersed, AOH cooperatively coordinates with area providers to assist our workforce housing residents.
