Resident Services

AOH seeks to enhance its communities through the coordination and facilitation of a variety of resident support services that empower residents to achieve their potential in education, workforce as well as family and social enrichment. Our services are as diverse as our residents. AOH develops programs based on the desires and needs of each community. All services are offered at no cost to the residents.

AOH provides additional assistance by facilitating access to supportive services that residents express or indicate a need for. Social support services vary from site to site.

After School Program

Studies show that the most dangerous time for children are the first few hours following dismissal from school. Many parents work and have no choice but to leave children unattended in the afternoons. AOH assists parents and children in this situation. On site Coordinators meet children at the bus and escort them to our "Kids Clubs". They are served a healthy snack, receive home work help and engage in recreational activities. Computers are available for educational activities and research. We also educate with group discussions on a regular basis about bullying and other age appropriate social issues. Children who participate in our programs on a regular basis are more successful in school, at home and in social settings. All coordinators and volunteers have passed criminal background checks and are usually parents themselves or have experience working with children. We also allow older siblings and teens, with supervision, to participate in a volunteer role.

Enrichment Activities: Participating in local functions such as the Bass fishing tournament, Character ConneX, a multi media presentation using music and illusions to emphasize the importance of making good choices.

Summer Programs

Children who attend our after-school programs easily transition into our summer programs. Children participate in educational activities as well as a variety of recreational activities. Children receive a free hot or box lunch and snacks Monday through Friday, provided by local area food banks, city government programs and non profit agencies.

Whether one of our residents or not, anyone ages 1-18 years of age can enjoy this opportunity to eat and socialize with others in our activity centers. Summer program activities include swimming, story time, board games, arts and crafts projects, pizza parties, community service activities, character building activities and much more.

Computer Learning

AOH is currently striving to offer computer learning at all of our properties. Young and old alike enjoy learning benefits of the internet and programs that are offered on-line. This is already offered at many of our communities. There is always someone available to assist in this learning process.

Senior Programs

AOH knows that there are Senior Citizens and People with a wide range of disabilities living in our communities. Many of these residents are isolated from family and are not able to get out and socialize very often. In this situation, AOH brings the opportunity for socializing to them. Breakfast and coffee gets the party started and the games begin.

Residents enjoy playing bingo and Loteria. They win door prizes such as cleaning products and every day house hold items. They enjoy pot lucks and the monthly birthday parties. All major holidays are celebrated as well. These activities bring the community together, friendships are created and residents have a wonderful reason to get out of their apartment.

National Night Out

Being a stay at home parent can be exhausting and monotonous for the parent as well as the child. AOH offers an hour or two each week for parents to bring their little ones to story time. This activity offers much needed socialization for pre- school age children. Story time is an interactive and fun way for parents to engage in a structured activity with their child.

AOH understands that it is important for parents to have a break from their kids once and a while. There is always shopping to do. Parents may even want to go out for dinner and a movie occasionally. AOH has the perfect solution. Sign your kids up for Parents Night Out. They will have a great time interacting with other children in a fun and supervised setting.

Food Banks

AOH understands that many individuals and families struggle with making ends meet. Not everyone qualifies for government food assistance. People are sometimes faced with tough choices. A mother may have to choose between badly needed shoes for her child or food for the table. A person living on Social Security or Disability may have to decide to purchase a needed prescription, electricity or groceries. Whenever possible, AOH teams up with area food banks to help make these decisions easier. AOH will purchase food and other household items from the food banks and deliver to the communities. AOH continues to assist individual families as well as entire communities in need of food assistance. Along with delivering food to residents, AOH also purchases snacks for our after-school and summer programs. We opened our first official "Kids Café" in 2007.

Holiday Events

AOH encourages our communities to offer fun events for residents during various holidays. You can find everything from Easter egg hunts to Valentines Day celebrations.

Community Safety

AOH works closely with local law enforcement agencies to assist in community safety and awareness. One of our San Antonio communities recently met with Police Chief McManus.

Gift In Kind

AOH continues their membership with Gifts in Kind International. Through this partnership, AOH is able to receive goods from partner businesses such as Home Depot, Disney and Max Rave. Products we receive go right back into our communities. Through this collaboration, AOH is able to receive bulk items such as pallets of new toys from Mattel and Warner Brothers. These items help make holidays and special events extra special for our families.
